An injury plagued Bermuda squash team fought against the odds to win their first match in the Senior CASA Squash Championships Team Event being held in Kingston, Jamaica.
Playing against Guyana, the Bermuda team reshuffled their playing order due to the ankle injury sustained by Patrick Foster. Foster dropped to #2, making way for Nick Kyme in the #1 spot, and the change paid off with Kyme beginning to find the form he displayed when playing on the professional circuit. He cruised to a comfortable 3-0 (9-3,9-3,9-1) win against Julian Chin.
Foster also won his match against Robert McDavid in 3 straight games (9-1, 9-0, 9-2), but team-mate Melrindo Caines, making his first appearance on court in the championships after sustaining a hamstring injury, was unable to play to his full potential against caribbean junior champion, Alex Arjoon. Caines showed his class in the first game which he narrowly lost 8-10, and continued to fight gamely, but lost the next two games 2-9, 4-9.
Michael Shrubb, the youngest member of the Bermuda Team had an impressive match against Raphael DeGroot, and sealed the win for Bermuda with an emphatic 3-0 victory (9-5,9-5,9-1)
Richard Van Liendon had a walkover in his match so the Bermuda Team defeated Guyana 4-1. Their next match will be an extremely tough encounter with the home nation, Jamaica.
